Oak Park Woods

The north 17 acres of David H. Shepherd Park in the City of Oak Park will become Oak Park Woods at Shepherd Park with improvements funded by the Oakland County Parks Healthy Communities Park and Outdoor Recreation Investment Plan. The anticipated investment of $7.96M includes $2.5M from the American Recovery Plan Act and $5.46M from Oakland County Parks’ capital improvement fund. Renovation will include pavilion and warming kitchen updates, a new restroom building, gathering and seating areas and an exciting new play area. The park closed in mid-April 2025 for construction. This portion of Shepherd Park is anticipated to reopen sometime in 2026.

Design and Engineering

December 1, 2023 5:00 AM - April 16, 2025 4:00 AM

In December 2023, Oakland County Parks kicked off the design process with Wade Trim. In July 2024 a design open house was held at Shepherd Park where the attached materials were shared with residents prior to the Oak Park Summer Concert Series.

The schematic design and inspirational images attached have an overall emphasis on peaceful, natural spaces and nurturing the excitement to explore. The priority improvements planned are:

  • Large new nature-themed playground
  • Year-round restrooms
  • Accessible entrance and gathering spaces with shade
  • Improved pavilion with new kitchen

Future phases will feature trail and boardwalk development and an additional play structure.
